Health and Wellness Benefits of Tea and Coffee are Found at the Intersection of Caffeine and Phytonutrients

Do you enjoy a cup of coffee or tea in the morning? I have deep coffee love, and find it challenging to reign in my consumption to an “all things in moderation” level. I had a secret relationship with tea for a few years, and have never spoken of it. Coffee, tea, and I enjoy a civilized relationship now.

When I worked in the UK, I enjoyed the tea culture, especially afternoon tea time. The history of afternoon tea started with Duchess Anna; a friend close to Queen Victoria. In the afternoon, Anna would grumble about a “sinking feeling”. Do you experience the afternoon doldrums? I do, and I would love to take a nap. An afternoon tea can perk up your energy while you relax alone or socialize.

The only difference between white, oolong, black, or green tea is the amount of oxidation. More oxidation renders increased flavour. Which do you prefer? My go-to is black tea. In the UK, and to this day, I take it with one cream and one sugar. Each tea has its place in my schedule.

Black tea is for the morning. Green tea is for an energy burst, but I do not steep it very long. White tea is all about comfort and relaxation. Peach is my favourite flavour. Find a peaceful space to sink into, and tea it up.

Clean, dry, and store your avocado seeds in a sealed container. Collect enough to make the processing effort worth it. There are easier ways to consume phytonutrients, but I think it would be funny to make avocado pit-tea. All joking aside, phytonutrients have been proven to possess anti-cancer properties, clean your liver, and reduce blood pressure.

Bok choi, cabbage, cauliflower, brussels sprouts, radish, arugula, and more vegetables have various levels of phytonutrients that can detox your liver. Cleaning out your liver makes it function better when filtering wine. Pro tip.

I do not intend to take away from the benefits of coffee. What most people call coffee is about 15% coffee, diluted with fillers and sugar. Black coffee has tremendous health benefits that are eliminated when you bloat your cup with heavy cream and real or chemical sugars. Drink it black if you want to lower the possibility of type-2 diabetes, liver/endometrial cancers, Parkinson’s disease, heart disease, and truly deadly depression. We need to pay more attention to depression, in my view. The precipitous health degradation from bad mental position, for whatever reason, is well documented.

One year while on leave from service, a massive wind shear storm ravaged all the trees and powerlines. Some homes were lightly damaged, but nothing major. Power would be out for some time. I fired up my camp stove and put on my large perc-pot to give everyone a warm cuppa on a cold and wet morning.

Any service member will tell you an army moves on caffeine. Don’t underestimate the power of a simple cup of tea or coffee. Cheer up with some “cheers” up to your friends, neighbours, and occasionally family if you have to. Only teasing.
