SO HAM/ HIER ZIJN
One of the many kinds of meditation is the so called So Ham meditation. The meditator speaks out the word SO mentally when inhaling and the word HAM when exhaling. I have been practising meditation for two years now and tried this technique as well. But it never worked with me.
The reason lies in the fact that So and Ham are Sanskrit words (meaning "He am I") and not words of my own language. When the words are replaced by "Hier Zijn" in Dutch (meaning Be Here) the effect of the breathing suddenly becomes stronger. The words "Hier Zijn" keep me in the now, which is the main purpose of meditation.
