FOR THE IMAGE VILLAGE - A MANIFESTO - http://www.fotolog.net/_pixelsnstones/

We live in the midst of Colossal Image Machines that are Corporate & Global - radiating us with highly manufactured images.

These images fuel the Global Consumerism & Economy that is physically altering our planet, our sense of self and all of the world`s cultures.

In it’s face we each are as vulnerable as the most innocent of primitive peoples in their first contact with the historical onslaught that dates to Columbus’s arrival in the New World.

Today this imaging transcends all languages and the scope of it’s effect is unprecedented in human history.

Their infection - more virulent than smallpox – rages over the earth from the most sophisticated mega cities to the remotest rainforest villages.

Fotolog with it’s democracy of picture takers and image artists is such fresh air. It is simultaneously Global and Local.

See the very number of languages that are dialoging with each other and how their images themselves reflect the cultures their makers inhabit.

Compare the images coming out of The Netherlands with the images from Brazil for example. Or the pix from Japan with the ones from San Francisco.

As we drink in the images on Fotolog – as they impact our way of seeing as we participate in this dialog of image posting - note if it effects the way you observe the Torrential Onslaught of commercial images subverting our neurons - on commercial television and throughout the rest of our highly logo infested world.

From car commercials to the Image Bites they rain down in the American version of the News.

In the meantime seeing all of your images here is so much better then the TUBE.

I subscribe the Manifesto. Tks;-)

Welcome to Fotolog!!!!!!

Amen. I find it very refreshing too and can hardly bear to look at some false-looking `professional` images now. As Charles Rennie Mackintosh was fond of saying, "There is hope in honest error. None in the icy perfections of the mere stylist."

You has a great brain

kewl kewl - w`come..

Totally correct! Curiously enough, I have just written about the Fotolog phenomenom (in Portuguese). You are comparing them to ad pix; I compared them to news pix, which always represent exceptions to the rule. Someone tending her garden in Brussels won`t make the news, whereas a plane crash in outer Mongolia will probably hit headlines worldwide. Fotolog brings you mostly the non-news, the everyday life as it happens around the world, thru the eyes of the people who are simply living, as opposed to witnessing. Or something to this effect... Fact is, Fotolog lends itself to "n" theories, all of them perfectly sound -- until proven flatly wrong... ;-) ||| I agree with what you wrote about bsamp. He is by far the most creative person among us, the one who managed to see the whole canvas and to change everyone else`s perception of it.

Me likee very much. Been throwing a manifesto or two around in my head for years, yours comes close enough for here and now - I`m in. (A phrase I`ve used before is "the heedless rush of hyper-consumerism" - there`s gotta be someone to stop and actually SEE. What I will achieve personally by doing so is anyone`s guess, but I gotta try ...))

Thanks for that.
Check out ADBUSTERS. It isn`t image specific, but it has lots to say about the over-saturation of visual garbage and its negative effect on the cultural landscape.

ditto on the Adbusters suggestion-- but i`m guessing you already know of it. welcome to the memescape, and thx for your contributions.

Bravo! I totally agree with that.
I`d rather spent a couple of hours here visiting some of the fotologs than playing couch potato in front of a tv. You can see so much, learn so much... Yesterday, for example, I visited a new fotolog and there was only 1 picture posted there. But it really intrigued me because of its beauty. I asked the guy if the picture was taken in Thailand and as an answer I got a "No, it was in Laos". I`d never imagine something that pretty, a golden palace, could be found there. I`ve never been there but that picture made me want to go there someday.

spent = spend :) typos

Hooray! Fotolog is more like life, more about the ordinary captured on the fly instead of what Ansel Adams referred to as "exquisitely rendered mediocrity."

man, I´ve just said it all!

As Chance the Gardner said in *Being There*, "I like to watch". Fotolog is an evolving, self-selected community of watchers. I hope the powers that be will use their creative juices and new funds to turn this great photofest into the best watching on the planet.

Yes but unlike the TUBE, which is a one way street, - here you are pushed to look everywhere else as well - for another bloody picture to take. Chance was a passive watcher. Here looking is a dialog - a conversation of looking and imaging - in this village of global picture takers.

Another essential difference is that "the powers that be" here are not providing the programing. The juice comes from the watchers. As does the funding for the enterprise which is commercial free. And what does this mean about putting your money where your mouth is? I was astonished paging California last nite that 90% of the posters are treating this like free TV. I finally decided I`m getting enough entertainment out of this to pony up. And it had nothing to do with posting more than 1 pic per day. It`s like the price of a video rental.

The powers that be are providing the mechanics of access. There is certainly as much opportunity the shape the nature of this community there as there is in what is being posted. I say this as a librarian who spends his life digging stuff out of databases. The way digging tools here evolve evolve will shape the community and the nature of this media. For instance one might be able to define a search by how long the logger has been posting and by some criteria of how many hits they have been getting. Or have the ability to look at urban street shots or rural compositions. Or see a list of group logs such as zen has built. I didn`t mean to imply, of course, that we are just watchers here. Cameras have always offered watchers a unique means of participation.

good one, i did write some stuff about fotolog, a long text actually but in portuguese. take care.

Well said!

Brilliant!

I feel fotolog is a stepping stone, a vanguard of creativity, unity and humanity that will expand open the minds and hearts of those still in dysfunctional darkness. I am honored to be a participant, sharing my part, adding it to the whole for I am humbled and expanded by what I view and learn here. Blessings to fotlog, may the positive energy from your creation bring vibrational integrity to our lands. Let`s hold peace in our hearts, then world peace follows!

wow! that`ll take a while to digest

At this moment, almost 28000 fotologgers. This is the best internet community I`ve ever been a part of. You wrote, "Fotolog with it’s democracy of picture takers and image artists is such fresh air. It is simultaneously Global and Local. " That is so well put. There is a taste of everything out here. It has definitley changed how I look at things. I stopped watching television a few years ago, and I don`t miss it at all. I still read news on-line, though sometimes wonder why I bother... I don`t trust what I`m reading most of the time. Fotolog is a refreshingly honest sociological and anthropological study. The images are straight from the everyday life of many interesting people and how they view the world - not the newsanchors in suits all regurgitating the same shit with the spin tweaked just right to pacify and further the interest of their sponsors and political affiliations. I hope Fotolog stays around for a long, long time.
